  • Q1: What is involved with the wax carving workshop?

The Lost Wax Carving Ring creating custom rings using the lost wax carving technique. This technique involves sculpting a wax model of the ring, which is then transformed into a metal ring through a casting process. It's a unique opportunity to craft personalised and intricate jewellery as well as chunkier organic shapes.

Q2: How exaclty is the wax transformed into metal?

The carved wax model is encased in a heat-resistant material, such as plaster or investment powder, to create a mold around it.

The mold is heated, causing the wax to melt and flow out, leaving behind an empty space in the shape of the original wax model. This step gives the process its name—"lost wax."

Metal Pouring: Molten metal, often gold or silver is poured into the cavity of the mould. This metal then cools and solidifies within the mold, taking on the intricate details of the original wax model.

Once the metal has completely cooled, the mold is carefully broken or dissolved, revealing the newly cast metal object. This metal object then needs to be cleaned and polished.

guide you through each step of the process, ensuring you can create a beautiful ring you'll be proud of.

Q3: How long is the workshop, and what's included in the fee?

The workshop usually spans across two sessions, one week apart. Depending on the complexity of your design, the initial carving session should take around 2.5 hours. The workshop fee covers all necessary materials and tools, including the wax, carving tools, and casting materials. You can then choose to return for the second week to learn how to finish your pieces in their metal form.

Q4: Do I need any prior experience in jewelry making to join the workshop?

Absolutely not! The workshop is designed for individuals of all skill levels. Whether you're a complete beginner or have some familiarity with jewelry making, your tutor will guide you through each step of the process, ensuring you can create a beautiful ring you'll be proud of.

Q5: What skills will I acquire during the workshop?

You will gain a hands-on experience in designing and carving a wax model, adding intricate details and personal touches. You'll learn the fundamentals of the lost wax technique, including how to work with various tools, create textures, and understand the casting process. By the end, you'll have a deeper appreciation for the art of jewelry making and a tangible piece of jewelry you've created.
